Here is another good article on the need to educate motorist on the proper way of sharing the road with cyclist as more of our city streets are adding bicycle lanes.

Check out the online comments on the Tribune website (at the end of the article). There are only a few, but they are mostly negative.

One poster says he’d prefer to ride on the sidewalk to cross the Angela bridge. Another says he still prefers to ride against the flow of traffic. One seems opposed to any measures to facilitate bicycling as a means of travel.

I can see both pros and cons to bicycle lanes, but overall think these are a positive step towards Michiana becoming a more bicycle-friendly area.

I think the key thing is education for both drivers and cyclists; what are the best ways to accomplish this?

My belief is that by the city creating more bike lanes; it will encourage more cyclists to use them. With more cyclists sharing the roads with motorist this will acclimate the motorist to driving more comfortably and safely around us.

In larger metropolitan or coastal cities that have well established bike routes and a larger base of cyclist using them, the motorist have accepted for the most part the idea of sharing the road with cyclist.

The fact of the matter is, as fuel prices continue to rise and motorists see cycling commuters and riders like us, this should encourage them to park their car and dust of their bike.

At least this is what I hope to see in the near future.

The photograph in the paper (which did not make it to the on-line version of the story) did indeed show confusion. The photo was of a biker using one of the lanes. The confusion was obvious, since he was riding on the wrong side of the street.
