Many cities (like Chicago) have ordinances and procedures that allow the city to confiscate abandoned bikes and donate them to charities. Citizens can even call the city’s 311 non-emergency line to report abandoned bikes.

It seems like a shame that these bikes just have to sit around, take up bike parking spots, and generally rust away when parts of them could be salvaged by Goshen’s Chain Reaction Bicycle Project or some similar organization.

I agree with Adam’s comment. Anyone know what happens to abandoned bikes in South Bend?

I get alot of calls for pickup of abandoned bikes in south bend and in mishawaka, but I’m sure most of them go to the police station and go up for auction. I picked up 2 yesterday in south bend, had to dig them out first. One of them was on older Schwinn world 10 speed and the other was a walmart roadmaster. Have 3 more in Mishawaka to pick up tomorrow when it is warmer out.
