BMC to be Represented on South Bend’s “Green Ribbon Commission”

Posted by Jeff Nixa on April 21, 2009

The Bike Michiana Coalition will be represented on  South Bend’s new “Green Ribbon Commission”, an effort by Mayor Steve Luecke and the City to “reduce energy usage, trim costs, beautify the city and help save the planet.”   BMC president Jeff Nixa was invited by the Mayor to represent the local cycling community.   South Bend’s new bicycle coordinator, Chris Dressel, will also be serving on the commission.

This policy/advisory group is a follow-through on Mayor Luecke’s signing of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement, committing S. Bend to become one of the nation’s “Cool Cities,” reducing the causes of global warming in line with the Kyoto Protocol.

Actual SB greenhouse gas emissions will be monitored and targeted during this effort, to meet Kyoto targets and timelines.

At the Commission’s first meeting on April 20th at the SB Century Center, over fifty local delegates from key public/private sectors were in attendance:  city and country government, local utilities (AEP, NIPSCO), universities (ND, IU), the Sierra Club, SJV Greens, local engineering and architectural firms, hospitals (Memorial, SJRMC), and others.   Each member will serve on various subcommittees e.g. transportation; land use; energy efficiency; recycling; green building; green power.

The purpose of the Commission is to propose policies (a “Climate Action Plan”) and recommend sustainable practices for city government, private business and local citizens. Co-chairs will be Jim Mazurek, new Dir. of Sustainability at ND, and Mike Keen, Dir. of Sustainability at IUSB.

Members of the Bike Michiana Coalition should be proud that the BMC is being recognized as a key player in the future/health of the South Bend community.
