Clean Up Your Route To Work Suggestion.

Posted by Phil G-E on May 31, 2009

I’m just back from cleaning up a shattered glass bottle close to my home and in the middle of my route to work. As I was quietly enjoying the beautiful afternoon, picking out pieces of glass from the paving stones (I live in an old section of Goshen), a few people walking or biking by asked what I was doing. They all seemed a bit puzzled, but almost all nodded their heads in support of my efforts.

While walking home, I wondered what it might be like if all of us who regularly commute to work (or market, church, etc.) took time out every once in a while to clean-up our routes to work. It would certainly be a way of spreading goodwill about cyclists. It’s fairly easy to bring along a small whisk broom, dust pan, and paper bag (works better than plastic) to sweep up glass, plastic, or other sharps that are clear tire hazards. Of course, wear bright colors if you’re out in the street and please put your safety first. Maybe this could be incorporated as an unofficial “Bike To Work Week” activity. What do you think?

Cyclist and car collide in Elkhart County.

Posted by Paul Taylor on May 28, 2009

The South Bend Tribune reported in its May 28 edition that another cyclist has been hit by a car.

“CONCORD TOWNSHIP — A bicyclist reportedly was struck late Monday while riding along County Road 17 just east of Elkhart.

According to a news release, Jordan Shankster, 22, of Elkhart, was riding his bike south on County Road 17 just north of Verdant Drive about 10:28 p.m. when he was struck from behind by a Ford pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup reportedly did not see Shankster until it was too late, despite Shankster’s bicycle having a headlight and taillight.

Shankster suffered cuts to his arms and complained of back pain.

No citations were issued.”

BMC’s Energizer Bunnies Given Pfeil Award

Posted by Jeff Nixa on May 21, 2009

Judy and Bill Lee, Vice-President and Treasurer respectively of the Bike Michiana Coalition (BMC), were recently awarded the YWCA’s prestigous Donna Pfeil award for volunteerism in Michiana.  The focus of this year’s award was the Lee’s ongoing work organizing and bike-route planning  for Run Jane Run, the premier all-women’s run/bike/golf event  in Michiana.

Since 1903, the YWCA of St. Joseph County has been the leading advocate for women and children in our community.  Through a combination of service and social action the Y reaches out to women who are seeking solutions to abusive situations, fighting chemical dependency, in need of job training and education and who want to improve their lives for themselves and their children.

Congratulations Bill and Judy!

Ride from ND to Goshen Ride of Silence

Posted by Adam Bee on May 20, 2009

Since there is a Ride of Silence in Goshen but not South Bend tonight, I plan to ride from ND to Lincoln Avenue Cycle.  The route is 30 miles, so I plan to leave at 4:45 sharp to make it there by 6:45.  If you’d like to ride along, show up at the Main Circle of Notre Dame before 4:45.  Make sure your bike has lights; I plan to return by 9:15 or 9:30, so we might be racing the sunset a bit on the way back.

Here is the route I plan to take (LINK).  I’ve never ridden most of those easterly roads, so I can’t guarantee their safety or comfort.  Let me know if you have suggestions on a better route!
