Bicyclist injured in downtown South Bend

Posted by Paul Taylor on June 19, 2009

According to a report in the South Bend Tribune, a cyclist was hospitalized when she ran into a car near Wayne and St. Joseph streets at about 4:00pm on June 18.

A car pulled out of the Wayne Street parking garage and into her path. The report does not say if she was riding on the sidewalk or the street, nor if she was riding on the right side of the street.

The report goes on to say the woman struck the car and fell from her bike injuring her hip and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Heh, I know you’re trying to be cautious and even-handed, but the report also doesn’t say if the driver was drunk, on a cell phone, nor if driving on a suspended license. I love how they say “a car pulled out” rather than “a driver pulled his/her car out”. Cars almost always drive themselves in news reports of collisions, it seems.

Also I love how they emphasize that the woman hit the car. That’s like saying if Joe trips Sue then Sue “ran into” Joe’s foot, as though she had a choice!

I’d like to see the rhetorical treatment they give to red-light runners getting T-boned. Were they simply run into?
