Lions Club looking for web help

Posted by Paul Taylor on July 26, 2009

I recently had the honor of speaking before the South Bend Lions Club. The Lions are active in various civic activities, including bicycling and bicycle safety. They are in the process of building a new web site and would like to include a Bicycle Safety Page. As Lou Gillespie explained it to me, they would like to have an ‘Illustrated Rules of The Road’.

Lou’s problem is in finding a web designer to help build this page. The Lions have a volunteer web designer building their new site, but they need someone to zero in on the new bicycle safety page. I told Lou I would be happy to reach out to Bike Michiana folks to seek the talent he needs. If you or someone you know would like to work with the Lions on this worthwhile project, Lou would love to hear from you. Contact Louis B. Gillespie lgms@michiana.org .

What to do with a worn out tube — Make friends with Fido

Posted by Danny Graber on July 17, 2009

Old inner tubes are welcomed for recycling by http://www.cycle-dog.com. The small company uses tubes to make attractive dog collars and leashes. Just think — Fido may develop a respect for cyclists instead of treating us like lunch. Cycle Dog, based in bike-friendly Portland, Oregon, invites individuals and shops to send expired tubes so the rubber doesn’t end up in landfills. All sizes are accepted. Mishawaka bicyclist hit by car

Posted by Paul Taylor on July 9, 2009

A 14 year old boy was struck in the crosswalk at Niles and Lincoln Way East. From the brief article in the South Bend Tribune, it sounds like this was a classic ‘Ride Out from Sidewalk’ accident: these accidents account for 0.7% of all accidents where the cyclist is entering the roadway. Back Door Friends are Best

Posted by bspitzer on July 6, 2009

Just inside the back door of the home I grew up in hangs a small, artsy-craftsy sign that reads, “Back door friends are best.” I suppose that sign still hangs by that back door; truthfully, I haven’t checked in years. But I think that’s a very true sentiment. Only your best friends approach your house at the back door. Formal visitors and strangers would never presume to knock on the back door, and most of us would get creeped out by strangers lurking around the back of our homes.

So what does this have to do with biking . . .

Nappanee Community Memorial Bike Ride — July 11

Posted by Danny Graber on July 3, 2009

The Nappanee community invites all bicyclists to join them for a memorial ride to remember those from the community who have died while bicycling to work. There are two stages to this event: 1) the six-mile memorial ride starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Summit Street entrance into Stauffer Park in Nappanee, and 2) prior to the memorial ride, the Nappanee Area Cycling Club (NACC) is hosting a longer Saturday morning ride of approximately 30 miles — starting at 7:00 a.m., also in Stauffer Park and then ending at the same location at 9:00 a.m.
