Indianapolis receives Bicycle Friendly Community award

indianapolis_marion_countyIn the Hoosier state, South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis applied for the BFC designation in 2009, an award given by the venerable League of American Bicyclists.

Indianapolis was successful, while South Bend and Fort Wayne have a bit more work to do.

Here is an excerpt from the LAB’s evaluation of the Indy application:

Community Highlights: Many stakeholders (health organizations, transportation organizations, senior citizen organizations, etc.) have come together to support the City’s commitment to improve cycling amenities. The outreach efforts go beyond the avid cyclist and encourage all types of citizens. The Greenway system in Indianapolis is an extensive network of multi-use trails. This system has received national design and landscaping awards and is seen as an outstanding example of urban transportation planning. Recently, the Monon Trail was designated a Millennium Trail by the White House Millennium Council and a Millennium State Legacy Trail by the American Trails Board. The system consists of 10 trails and is 58.9 miles long.
