Bike South Bend committee is formed

Twenty-three people attended the first meeting of a new committee being organized by the City. Under the leadership of Chris Dressel, the South Bend Bicycle Coordinator, the attendees reviewed the status of the City’s biking and walking infrastructure as well as plans for future upgrades. The twenty-three represented business, school, health, government and civic groups throughout greater South Bend. As members were introducing themselves, each was asked to identify the best and worst thing about cycling in South Bend. Worst things seemed to be safety and the weather. Best things were the progress that has been made, the cooperation of many people and organizations, and the potential for further improvements.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Evolution of South Bend’s Bike Network: 2006 to 2010

South Bend City Planners Chris Dressel and Michael Divita have prepared a series of images showing the growth of South Bend’s bike network over the past few years. The illustrated routes include separated bike / pedestrian paths, striped bicycle lanes and signed routes. For more detailed images, please visit the City’s bicycle page.

Tribune publishes opinion of Bicycle Indiana in VIEWPOINT

Nancy Tibbett, Executive Diretor of the statwide bicycling advocacy group submitted the article, which was published earlier this month. She submitted the piece to several newspapers around the state, and the South Bend Tribune was one of the media where it was published. The article follows…

“In recent weeks, Indiana has experienced an unsettling spike in the reports of bicyclists and pedestrians struck by automobiles. Niles opens another mile of bike/ped trail

Trail enthusiasts await the ribbon cutting

About two dozen hearty souls braced themselves against a blustery wind to celebrate the extension of the trail at Riverfront Park. Against the backdrop of the St. Joseph River, a cloudless sky, and swirling fall leaves, Autumn Carey, Chairwoman of the City of Niles Parks and Recreation Department  said the trail “has been twenty years in the making”.  The first section of the trail was opened in 1996. She said “it takes a lot of people” to accomplish something like this.
