Bike/Ped infrastructure upgrades in St. Joseph County, IN

In a recent post, I commented on a new Marshall County Bike/Ped path in Plymouth. Today I am concentrating on St. Joe County. Cyclists look at the huge need for friendlier places for biking and walking, and often get discouraged. But progress is being made.  Listed below are nine improvements in the county that have been recently completed, or are on the drawing board for the near future.

Mishawaka Riverwalk

Some would say the Mishawaka Riverwalk is the most impressive project in the county. It would be hard to make a case against that claim. The path that hugs the St. Joseph River complements the overhaul from a toxic industrial area in city center to an urban area that is as good as any around. It also is a part of the IN-MI Trail. Mainly along the north bank of the river, the trail extends from the Mishawaka City Limits on the west (Logan St.), almost to Cedar St. on the east, a distance of over 1.3 miles. Thanks to the support, drive and dedication of Indiana cyclists, as of January 3, 2011, you can obtain your I Share The Road license plate from the BMV and proudly display your pedal passion even when you’re driving.

 To get your I Share The Road license plate, you have three options: visit a BMV Branch, or call 1-888-692-6841, or go to

New Bike Michiana board of directors

Pictured left to right are JV Peacock, Bill Lee, Pete Colan, Judy Lee, Pete Jank, Rob Shellhamer and Paul Taylor. Mike Atkin and Henry Scott were not present when this file photo was taken.

There are three changes in the board, effective in 2011, but for the most part, the board stays intact.

Judy Lee continues as President, Rob Shellhamer as Vice President, Bill Lee as Treasurer, and JV Peacock as Director of Events Marketing. Leaving the board is Pete Colan. Paul Taylor is stepping down as Secretary, becoming an at-large member. Joining the board are Pete Jank as Secretary, Henry Scott as Director of Communications, and Mike Atkin as at-large.

Bicycle Swap Meet: Sat. March 12th

This annual event is sponsored by the Michiana Bicycle Association (MBA) and the Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association (NIMBA). There is no charge for buyers or sellers. Anyone is welcome to bring bicycle related items to sell. Sellers should arrive between 11:00 and and 11:30 to setup. First-come, first-served for table space.

Ride the Divide Film Screening: Sun. January 30th

NIMBA, with sponsorship from Spin Zone, will host a screening of Ride the Divide as a fundraiser on Sunday, January 30th at 7:00 p.m. in Eck Visitors Center, near the University of Notre Dame.

The film is an award-winning documentary about the 2,700 mile Tour Divide mountain bike race down the Rockies from Canada to Mexico; it won best adventure film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.

Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance online or $15 at the door. Please check the event’s Facebook page for the latest information.

The year in review – good things cycling in 2010

This is the time of year to reflect on accomplishments for the year just ended. Here is a short summary of Michiana good things cycling.

Bike to Work Week saw miles ridden in The Corporate Challenge increase to 26,154 from 16,179 (an increase of 74%). Also the number of teams increased to 119 from 111 (an increase of 7%) and South Bend closed off a street so the Bike Michiana Coalition could host an organic blueberry pancake breakfast.

Bike Michiana for Hospice saw the number of riders increase to 475 from 273 (an increase of 102%). Increases are expected again in 2011 since several new features will be added, including a 200 mile route. Read the rest of this entry »
