NACTO releases new Urban Bikeway Design Guide

Posted by Paul Taylor on April 26, 2011

All cities and states have guidelines for the transportation infrastructure – engineering standards mainly – so that travel in one U.S. city, say South Bend, is not greatly different from travel in another, say Portland. These guides cover all forms of transportation including walking and biking. The most important guides are MUTCD and AASHTO (Manual on Uniform Transportation Control Devices, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials)

Now another group has joined the fray: NACTO (the National Association of City Transportation Officials). They have released a new guide specific to bicycling. You can see it at http://nacto.org/cities-for-cycling/design-guide/

The League of American Bicyclists believes that this guide helps “pave the way for dramatic improvements in national standards for bike infrastructure, signage and markings. ”

I think anything to make biking and walking more better, is more better.
