Avenue Bicycle Station Community Ride

Posted by lhierony on April 24, 2009

The Avenue Bicycle Station, with the support of the IU South Bend Health and Wellness Center held its first biweekly community (family friendly) bike ride on April 16th at 6 p.m. This was definitely NOT the spandex and carbon fiber group. Approximately 15 people (2 kids, 4 teenagers, and a 70 year old woman) of all biking abilities participated in either a 3 or 8 mile route, starting at the Avenue Bicycle Station on Mishawaka Ave in River Park. In addition to a variety of cycling levels, there was quite a variety of bicycles, including a 1970s modified Schwinn (banana seat!), a folding bike, an adult tricycle, a cruiser, and single speed track bikes. The folks on who participated were unique as well.

The Nursing Department is looking for any groups or bike shops that are willing to participate to make this a fun and educational event for our campus and community. Please see the letter below details.

Bicyling Magazine Features South Bend

Posted by lhierony on September 29, 2008

Check out this month’s issue of Bicycline Magazine (it’s the November issue).  South Bend and Michiana are featured in a one page article about cycling in our area.  A map of one of the areas best rides is shown (Buchanan-Gendora- Baroda) along with some of the local hot spots (Fiddlers Heath and the College Football Hall of Fame).  It’s interesting that they mention Bella Vita Cycling Club and the Notre Dame Cycling Club with no mention (other than posting the web address) of Michiana Bicycling Club nor the Amish Lands and Lakes.  Perhaps the author is a Notre Dame alum and/or isn’t from this area at all.

The article is a complementary but superficial overview of cycling in Michiana.  The article is not posted on their web site, but it is in the issue that is being sold now.

Changing Transportation Culture

Posted by lhierony on September 12, 2008

I wonder how many cyclists realize that the AAA (American Automobile Association) was started in collaboration with cycling clubs. Both groups were trying to gain access to and improve roads that were primarily used by horses, buggies and wagons. Most road users wanted neither bikes OR cars on the road. Funny how little things change. There has been a change in the players, but the issues are the same.
