Trainer Nights

Posted by Adam Bee on December 9, 2008

Spinzone rides Wednesdays at 6pm, and ProForm rides Tuesdays at 6pm

If you’re like me, you eat more in the winter and get less time on the bike. Pumpkin pie and eggnog conspire with short days and slushy roads to sap away whatever fitness I accrue over the summer.

Sure, I’ve got a stationary trainer, a set of Sportscrafter rollers, and some training DVDs to watch, but it gets so boring!

Luckily, SpinZone and ProForm are each hosting trainer parties all winter. 6pm, Proform on Tuesdays and SpinZone on Wednesdays. You just show up with your bike and trainer (or call ahead to borrow one), and they pop in a DVD out of your collection.

It’s a weird and uncanny phenomenon, but training with other people is actually much easier than sweating alone in your basement. Spinning classes across the country will be packed come January, but now there’s no need for us to wait ’til New Years to fight our fatty fate!

355 Bikers Show for Patrick Sawyer Memorial Ride

Posted by Jeff Nixa on July 30, 2008

According to an Outpost employee at Tuesday evening’s Pat Sawyer Memorial Ride, 355 bicyclists were present and counted as they left the parking lot of Northpointe School in Granger.   The Ride, organized by Matt Mooney and JV Peacock, was designated as a fundraiser for the Sawyer family.  J.V. said “Our goal is to raise $10,000 for Patrick’s family.”  A large number of donations were received at the event itself, including one cyclist who donated $400, “one hundred for each of Patrick’s children.”

Patrick’s wife Nancy, her children and several other family members were present at the start of the ride, and Nancy was visibly moved by the spectacle of so many riders, of all ages, including families with children who participated in a 4-mile family ride prior to the regular longer rides.   “I can’t believe all this support,” said Nancy, just one day after Patrick’s funeral.  “I don’t even know these people!  I know I will have my bad days, but right now I feel a real lightness and energy from people like these.”

Weekly Group Rides

Posted by Henry Scott on June 19, 2008

Know of a regular group or club ride in the area? Please add a comment with details, and I’ll keep editing the main part of this post with the latest information.

Outpost Tuesday Night Rides: Outpost Sports organizes a group ride every Tuesday night starting in Granger. They have groupings for distance and pace that will suit just about all riders, and they do their best to not drop any rider. From the Outpost website you can subscribe to a mailing list with the latest details. They also had a website dedicated to the group rides last year; I’m not sure if this is still current because it states 2007 on the main page: Ride with Outpost.

Spin Zone Wednesday Night Ride: The Spin Zone ride starts at 6:30 PM at the Spin Zone shop on Bittersweet Rd. in Granger. As Adam pointed on in the comments below, it is a good idea to call the shop ahead of time to confirm that the ride is on (574-243-4994). Here’s a direct link to their page on weekly and special rides: LINK.

Proform Thursday Night Rides: This group leaves from ProForm Bike Shop (Ironwood and Rt 23) each Thursday at 5:30. It’s fairly fast, so if you’re not a racer you may want to plan to drop off with someone else when the pace heats up. Helmets are required.

MBA Weekly Rides: The Michiana Bicycle Association organizes regular rides each week (currently Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends!); you can get the latest information here.
