Posted by Henry Scott on June 5, 2012

Three local organizations, The Center for the Homeless, The YMCA of Michiana, and the Alcohol & Addictions Resource Center, are hosting a triathlon on Sunday, August 26th, at the Michiana YMCA in South Bend.

Notably, this event will have an interesting twist: for those interested, the swim leg may be substituted with a kayaking leg on the St. Joseph River!

The race series will again include Team Time Trial (TTT), Road Race (RR) and Criterium (crit) events, but it will be even bigger this year with over 300 collegiate cyclists from about forty schools.

ND Cycling Classic: Race Details and Volunteer Request

Posted by Henry Scott on March 16, 2011

The Notre Dame Cycling Classic weekend will be Saturday, 3/26, and Sunday, 3/27.

This two-day collegiate race series will feature a Team Time Trial (TTT) and Road Race (RR) on Saturday, and a criterium race (crit) on Sunday. Saturday’s TTT and RR will be on county roads just north of Potato Creek State Park, but Sunday’s spectator-friendly crits will involve many high-speed laps around a short course in downtown South Bend.

Volunteers:
Volunteers are particularly needed for Saturday’s TTT and RR. If you can spare a few hours helping out it would make a big difference and be greatly appreciated by the ND cycling team. No experience or equipment is necessary to volunteer. If you can volunteer, please add your name by a time slot on their online volunteer spreadsheet and contact Joe Magro (bike@nd.edu) for further instructions.

Fans:
Spectators are also welcome for the Saturday’s TTT and RR, but the courses are long enough that racers will only go by every forty minutes or so. Sunday’s crits, however, are ideal for spectators. Racers will go north on Michigan St and south on Main St between Washington and Wayne Streets, and anywhere along the course will be great for fans. Races start at 8:00 a.m., with the Division A Women’s and Men’s races starting at 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.

For more information about the race weekend, including detailed listings of start times and course maps, please see the official event invitation at USA Cycling.

Pictures from the Safetytown Criterium

Posted by Henry Scott on March 24, 2009

img_6074jpgMy brother Sam visited this past weekend, and on Sunday we made our way over to Rum Village to see some of the Safetytown Criterium and practice photographing moving objects. Unfortunately for us we didn’t make it until the last race, but we had a great time watching the Men’s Category A riders. Click the image at right if you’d like to see some of our pictures.

The Rum Village course is great for spectators! The loop is only 0.9 miles, and based on the time stamps from my photos the riders came by just about every two minutes — apparently averaging upwards of 28 mph for over an hour! I very much hope this becomes an annual event; the Notre Dame cycling team did a great job with this!

Notre Dame’s “Safetytown Criterium”: Sunday in Rum Village

Posted by Henry Scott on March 21, 2009

This is a followup to Adam’s previous post about the Notre Dame race weekend (this weekend!). As he mentioned, Sunday’s criterium at Rum Village will be conducive for spectators: the loop is only 0.9 miles, so from any spot you’ll see the riders fly past many times.

Notre Dame Race Weekend: March 21-22

Posted by Adam Bee on March 2, 2009

The Notre Dame Cycling Team is hosting its first-ever weekend of collegiate racing on March 21st and 22nd.  Scholar-athletes from across the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference will fly around the roads south of Buchanan on Saturday and Rum Village Park on Sunday for glory and points toward a conference championship.

Spectators are welcome at both events, but the criterium at Rum Village (March 22) is the more spectator friendly of the two, as the peloton flies by every two minutes or so.

We still need a few more volunteers; if you’re interested you can sign up here.  Email me at cbee (at) nd.edu if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a half- or quarter-shift.

Preliminary race flyers can be viewed here.  Mark the weekend for a thrilling spectacle of speed and power!
