Posted by Paul Taylor on May 5, 2012

About 70 cyclists, along with over a dozen walkers/runners, and motor vehicles joined in the procession meant to draw attention to the need for all users to share the roadway and crosswalks. The procession concluded at the County-City building in downtown South Bend where there was a press conference, and short speeches by local dignitaries. The gathered crowd seemed especially inspired by the words of Yatish Yoshi, the chairman of the event.  I am re-printing his speech below, and it is well worth reading.

Goshen Named Bicycle Friendly Community

Posted by Phil G-E on September 16, 2011

I just saw this news on Facebook from the City of Goshen:

Goshen Named Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The City joins South Bend, Bloomington, Carmel and Indiana/Marion County as the only other Indiana communities with this designation. The City is committed to promoting bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.

Here’s a link to the press release reporting the addition of Goshen, IN as one of 11 new BFCs across the country for Fall 2011.

Very well done, Goshen Bikes! Thanks to all who helped make this happen!

South Bend chosen for statewide health and fitness study

Posted by Paul Taylor on August 18, 2011

The South Bend Parks and Recreation Department has been named one of ten
“Beta Sites” to find community aspects that influence obesity and active living.

Since 2009, the Healthy Communities Research Group – (GP RED) – and Indiana University, along with Indiana Parks and Recreation Association, Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, GreenPlay, and Design Concepts, have been working together to develop and test the Healthy Communities Surveillance and Management Project. This project identifies and targets the community aspects that influence obesity and active living, specifically focusing on policies, funding, physical assets, programs and services that influence health and fitness levels of youth ages 10 – 14 years. This is the age where youth start to become independent in their lifestyle choices. Studies show that if a child is overweight or obese at this age, they are 80% likely to be overweight or obese as an adult, and 80% of those adults will produce overweight or obese children. If not addressed, this trend can drastically negatively impact the overall health and the economy in a community.
