South Bend to DeKalb (NIU) Via Trains and a Monkey Bike

I hesitated before buying a folding bicycle because, frankly, I thought I’d hardly use it. And, although it is true that I don’t use it often, the “monkey bike” has added a new dimension to my utility cycling. Now I wonder why I didn’t get one sooner! Here are a few details from my latest trip: from South Bend to DeKalb, IL (home of Northern Illinois University).

Taking a Folding Bike on the South Shore and Metra Lines [South Bend to Argonne National Lab]

Since acquiring a folding bike a few months ago, I’ve written about my experiences coupling it with Amtrak and Greyhound for door-to-door intermodal public transportation (here and here, respectively). This post is about my latest experience, the key components of which involved taking the bike on the South Shore commuter train from South Bend to downtown Chicago and a Metra train from Chicago to Downers Grove. It was a great trip!

Taking a Folding Bike on Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited

I recently wrote about acquiring a folding bike and my experience taking it on Greyhound. As I mentioned in that post, my motivation is to transport myself to and from public transportation stations (e.g., Greyhound and Amtrak) for car-free intercity travel. Here I’ll briefly describe my experience taking it on Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited line over Labor Day Weekend.

Using a Folding Bike Coupled with Pub Trans for Point-to-Point, Car-Free Travel

One of my favorite things about bicycles is that they offer such a simple means to get around. In many ways, I feel the same about public transportation. Sure it takes a little longer to get from place to place, but it is just so easy and relaxing compared to driving. As an added bonus, I can read or sleep along the way. But, what can I do when pub trans can’t get me within walking distance of my destination? I recently bought a folding bike, and it seems that I’ve got a solution… at least for some destinations.
