Ghost bikes in the news

Posted by Paul Taylor on September 22, 2009

I first saw ghost bikes in Seattle, WA some five years ago. I didn’t know they had a name, but I did know they made a statement. Then a couple of them sprung up here in Michiana. Today, they made news in the South Bend Tribune. Read the Tribune article here.

Cycling Advocacy in the Tribune’s Michiana Point of View

Posted by Henry Scott on September 6, 2008

Somehow I missed this on the day it was published (September 3rd), but Kathleen Petitjean wrote a very strong cycling advocacy piece for the South Bend Tribune’s Michiana Point of View. Here’s a direct link to her essay (unfortunately, it will only be freely available for a few more days).

The piece is even more poignant because it was written in direct response to the death of Patrick Sawyer; tragically, Peter Kaczor’s death apparently occurred in the interval between submission and publication.

Peter J. Kaczor

Posted by Adam Bee on September 2, 2008

I didn’t know Peter J. Kaczor personally but his death hit close to home for me, as I imagine it has for most of us in the cycling community.  Besides the “that could have been me” feeling, I also mourn the loss of a good man, husband, and father who died too soon from causes we’re working to prevent.

With that in mind, here is his obituary, as published in the South Bend Tribune:

Bicyclist Fatality

Posted by Henry Scott on August 28, 2008

A cyclist was killed by a collision with a motor vehicle at the St. Joseph / Elkhart county line on Ash road early this morning. Few details are available so far, but the South Bend Tribune has a preliminary report online: LINK.

Update @ 5:30 PM: The Tribune has posted additional information: LINK (this link was changed on 8/29; the previous Tribune link was no longer valid). Oddly, both the cyclist AND the motorist were traveling south in the northbound lane; the cyclist was hit from behind.
